The next-generation car will likely not have a hybrid, but it is possible that an EV will.
Porsche doesn’t hesitate to enter the electric world. The Taycan is the first company-owned EV. It’s also very fast in Turbo trim. Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo versions of Taycan are still in development. Rumours persist that a hybrid 911 or fully electric model will soon be available. However, a new report by Autocar suggests that these rumors are false.
Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche’s boss for the 911 model range, is believed to be the source of this claim. He spoke with Autocar about a variety of topics including an electrified 911. According to him, he isn’t keen to develop either a hybrid or fully electric version Porsche’s iconic car. He told Autocar that the 911 would be the last Porsche to go electric after his retirement. As Autocar reports, it’s likely that this will occur after 2030.
This is in direct contrast to long-standing rumors that electric power will be available in the 992-series cars as soon as 2022. According to the report, Porsche won’t offer a hybrid until 2026 when the next-generation 911 is available. Walliser seems to be concerned about adding too much weight on the 911. He believes that hybrid and electric powertrains should be integrated into the vehicle’s design, not an afterthought.
It’s interesting to note that Autocar report contradicts a report from Top Gear last year. This report referred to Oliver Blume, Porsche CEO, and August Achleitner, the man Walliser had replaced as Porsche’s sports car boss. It stated that a hybrid 911 would make the most powerful 911 of all. It was also claimed that the 992-generation was designed with space for hybrid components. Although no specific date was given, it was suggested that it would be arriving soon.
There may be some discord within Porsche’s ranks about the future of the 911. Walliser appears determined to stick with internal-combustion power. However, his quote did state that he would “fight” for it to remain this way. This suggests that the 911’s future is not yet certain.
We have the most powerful 911 we’ve ever seen to admire. Although the new 911 Turbo S has 640 horsepower, a hybrid 911 could be even more powerful. Perhaps electrification will not be so bad after all.
