Porsche 911 Spy Shots Suggest New Sport Classic Model Coming Soon

Expect a small production run.

There are many flavors of the Porsche 911, making it sometimes difficult to identify the nondescript prototype. We have a new set of spy photos that shows us a familiar-looking Porsche 911. This is not the first 911 to feature a ducktail spoiler. However, this one is quite different.

Previous 911 spy photos captured a ducktail-equipped Turbo model test vehicle with its rear haunches and gaping air intakes that punctured the rear fenders. The latest batch of photos shows the vehicle without them. The fenders look smoother without the intakes. But that’s just one difference. The new 911 Turbo-like prototype has a double-bubble roof that can be seen from close inspection.

Front and rear bumpers differ, and the test vehicle sports fascias borrowed form the Turbo S. The wheels are center-lock. The Turbo test vehicle was previously believed to be a new Sport Classic model. However, this non-Turbo 911 appears to be a better choice. The prior 911 Sport Classic came with a 3.8-liter flat-6 that produced 408 horsepower (304 Kilowatts) as well as 310 pound-feet (442 Newton-meters) torque.

The powertrain of the test vehicle is unknown. However, it could be the same one that powers the 911 GTS model. It is expected to produce 470 horsepower (350kilowatts) upon arrival, which should provide plenty of power for the Sport Classic.

We are left wondering what Porsche is doing to the Turbo ducktail model with these new shy shots. There are many 911 variations, so Porsche is not short of options. Porsche will be developing a new 911 Sport Classic. We expect it to be limited in production, much like the 2010 model. Porsche limited the production to 250 units. Porsche won’t reveal the new model before late next year or early next.
