Porsche isn’t ready to break the record at the ‘Ring.
The 919 Hybrid Evo continues its retirement tour after breaking Lewis Hamilton’s laptime at The Spa, with Neel Jani behind it. Many speculations circulated after the historic run. They suggested that the 919 Evo would beat the record of the Nurburgring Nordschleife from the Porsche, which holds the fastest lap time since 1983. We’re referring to the Porsche 956 C race car, which completed the 12.93 mile (20.832-kilometers’) ‘Ring in 6:11.13.
Stuttgart’s carmaker knows how to excite their fans. Instead of setting a lap record, the company sponsored a demo race in front of 200,000 people. Both legendary racing cars ran side-by-side at the Ring. Hans-Joachim Stuck piloted the record-holding 956 C, and Timo Bernhard drove the 919 Evo. Stuck described the experience as a Christmas present. The 956 C is described by Stuck as a race car that runs “like a clockwork”.
It was a spectacular show run that heralds the beginning of the 24-Hours Nurburgring Race next month. Although the 919 Hybrid Evo might not have broken the 956 C’s record at The Green Hell the side-by is still more historic and fitting for the 919 Tribute tour. It may be absurd to break its own record.
The 919 Tribute Tour will continue its journey around the globe after the Nurburgring race. It will next stop at the 25 Hours VW Fun Cup, Spa on July 6-8. The tour will then continue on to the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 12-15. It will also be present at the Festival of Porsche, Brands Hatch, September 2, and at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion Laguna Seca on September 26-29.
