Porsche 963 LMDh Prototype Debuts At Goodwood, Will Race In 2023

It will make its debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona, January.

There are many new vehicles at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, but one vehicle is not designed for street use. Porsche’s new 963 LMDh prototype racing car was unveiled. It will be competing in the 2023 Porsche Penske Motors race. The team will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship as well as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The 963 was built to LMDh regulations. However, it is a completely new setup by Multimatic. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged HTML8 engine, based on the 918 Spyder combination. The design of the 963 is influenced by the 956, and 962 hybrid. The racer also features a little bit of the current-generation 911 with the solid rear strip. Porsche enthusiasts will recognize the white-red/black color scheme as a tribute to the automaker’s racing heritage.

“After 7,889 kilometers (4,900 miles), during the first half 2022, we are on a very positive path, but there is still much to do before the start next season,” stated Thomas Laudenbach (Vice President of Porsche Motorsport). The new Porsche 963 will continue the legacy of iconic models like the 917, 935 and 962. We are confident that we will be well-positioned in technology. We have also established the appropriate team structures to ensure we win the exciting competition between different manufacturers and concepts.

The new 963 will race its debut at Daytona’s Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in January 2023, in the GTP class. Two cars will be competing in each championship, and two more cars will be available for backup. However, the new Porsche racer will not be strictly a Porsche machine. The automaker plans to make the 963 available for customer-run teams starting next year. The race car will be on display at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
