Porsche Highlights Lightweight 911 GT3 Weissach Package In NY

Magnesium wheels can be an option, and they shed 25 more pounds.

The 911 GT3RS was unveiled by Porsche at the Geneva Motor Show. It is the ultimate naturally-aspirated model with a 4.0-liter flat six engine that produces a staggering 520 horsepower (383kilowatts) and a high 9,000-rev redline. The company also teased the Weissach Package, which will reduce weight for customers who want a more serious coupe. The firm will reveal more details about the lighter 911 at the New York Auto Show.

The Weissach Package replaces GT3 RS’ magnesium roof with a carbon-fiber part. Porsche claims that the Weissach Package saves 1.1 lbs (0.5 kg) over the GT3 RS standard roof and almost 3 lbs compared to the aluminum 911 panel. Porsche also uses carbon fiber to make the suspension coupling rods and stabilizer bars. This results in a further 11.9 lb (5.4 kg) weight loss. It is better to leave the carbon fiber visible than to paint it for the rear wing, side mirrors and hood.

The Weissach package includes lightweight carpeting and carbon fiber shift paddles. Porsche claims that this saves about 0.5 lb. The Weissach Package logo is also embossed on the glove compartment and on the seat headrests.

Porsche offers an optional set with magnesium wheels that can be used to reduce the weight of the GT3 RS by 25 pounds (11 kg).

The GT3 RS weighs in at just 3,153 lbs (1430 kg) with the Weissach Package, magnesium wheels, and the Weissach Package. However, the equipment is very expensive. The Weissach package adds $18,000 on top of the base model’s $187.500 price. Add $13,000 to the model’s base price with the magnesium wheels. The RS would cost around $266,240 if it had every option.
