What are these two-door Panameras going to be called if the Panamera is a 4-door 911?
Porsche is eager to explore niche markets like the controversial SUV-coupe. Are we really surprised that rumors are circulating about the Panamera’s rear door being removed? The Stuttgart-based marque has the history to support such a decision, taking into account the 928 coupe that was sold between 1977-1995. Porsche also tried to make a convertible 928 by creating a droptop version of its luxury grand tourer.
Blast from the Past:
This is the latest rumor. Autocar claims that the two-door Panamera models are being released next year in order to compete with the BMW 8 Series Coupe or 8 Series Convertible. According to German media, the report states that development is ongoing and the cars will ride on a shorter version of the MSB platform that underpins the regular Panamera.
A Refreshed Panamera Is Coming:
The two-door models will be closely related to the Panamera, and may share almost everything. However, Porsche’s design boss Michael Mauer did not rule out the possibility of additional Panamera derivatives beyond the “929”, unless Porsche chooses to use a real name. Although it is not confirmed by Porsche, Michael Mauer, Porsche’s chief designer, did not rule out the possibility of additional Panamera variants other than the Sports Turismo wagon.
The 928 revival, if approved for production, will be a 2+2 similar to the 911 but with more space for rear passengers and better functionality than you would expect from a GT.
