You won’t get as many OTA updates on a smartphone as there are on a smartphone.
Automakers are still working on sophisticated software to integrate into their cars. As more and more companies announce support for over-the air updates, it’s also happening after purchase. Porsche, which excludes Tesla, is the first company to announce OTA revisions for all its cars. It started with the Taycan.
With the new software, the early electric sedans that were built in 2020 have faster acceleration for the Turbo S and improved charging functionality. The Smartlift function is available for models with air suspension. Robert Meier, Taycan director, says that Porsches will not follow the same strategy as smartphone manufacturers who frequently release new software to their devices.
It will continue to be the traditional method of launching a new-generation car and then giving it a facelift about four years later. Porsche will be able bundle more equipment in its cars by integrating support for OTA upgrades. The paywall will also be removed. Functions on Demand, as it’s known, allows Taycan owners access to over-the-air updates and unlock features such as Active Lane Keep Assist.
Robert Meier stated to Autocar that the Taycan, and future models with OTA updates, will be first and foremost cars and not become smartphone-like devices. It’s not a smartphone; it’s a car you must drive safely. These updates won’t be as frequent as those on your phone, in my opinion.
The all new MXacan will be the next Porsche model that supports OTA updates. The model is being built exclusively for electric vehicles and will be the first to use the PPE platform that the Zuffenhausen brand has developed with Audi. The Four Rings will release an identical Q6 E–Tron. Both are planned for a 2022 launch.
Tesla and Porsche are not the only automakers that offer over-the-air updates. Ford also does the same with the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 and F-150. OTA updates have been available in the United States for years. In fact, Mercedes has been doing so since 2013. Through a software update, the Jaguar IPace gained 12 miles more range by the end of 2019, and Volvo continues to improve its cars.
