Clients who desire “range and torque”
Another day, another Porsche diesel speculation. We heard earlier this month about plans to eliminate the diesel engine. However, it was only a few days later that it was confirmed that the new Cayenne would receive a compression ignition driver. It is now reported that the Macan SUV could get a diesel engine.
Detlev von Plaen, Porsche’s chief sales officer, said that the Macan facelifted model could get the same diesel engine than the Cayenne. Automotive News
Von Platen confirmed that the Cayenne diesel will be coming “likely during the course of the year.” The car is currently being held until the scandal over diesel-emissions subsides.
Porsche has not developed diesel engines, and will never do so. Von Platen says that the importance of the powertrain to Porsche is low.
It was not particularly relevant. Only 14 percent of the 246,000 cars that we sell globally are diesel-powered. Our plug-in hybrids are in high demand, especially since their electric range has been extended to 31 miles (50 km). This plays a major role.
Customers of Porsche are becoming more interested in electrified models. Hybrids account for roughly half of Panamera’s sales, while diesel-powered models only make up 15%. The next year will see the introduction of a hybrid Macan to the range. It’s likely that the electrified model will soon dominate the model’s overall sales.
