…and not far behind the 911.
The Porsche Taycan outsold the Panamera by 2 to 1. In 2021, the electric sedan and wagon duo accounted for 9,419 total sales. The gasoline-powered model was also available in the same body styles, with 4,257 sales. This is 10 percent more than 2020.
The sales of the Taycan nearly doubled compared with the previous year, and the EV even beat the 911. In previous quarters, the two models were in competition but the rear-engined sportscar won with 10,042 deliveries. This is 14 percent more than 2020. The 718 lineup was sold with the Boxster/Cayman, and all of their derivatives. 4,292 units were sold last year (+25%). This means that the Taycan was twice as popular.
The SUVs were, as expected, Porsche Cars North America’s cash cow in 2021. 17.299 customers purchased the midsize Cayenne to take the second place in the sales charts. The Macan, which is smaller, was again the number one seller, selling 24,716 units. PCNA set an annual record with 70,025 vehicles delivered over the past 12 months. The demand was up 22 percent over the previous year and 14 more than the record-setting 2019
The EV share grew to 13.5 percent. This is also supported by the plug-in hybrids. 17 percent of all cars sold last year were electric. The future looks bright for Porsche with the introduction of the next generation, electric-only Macan at the end of next or early 2023. The current gas model will be around for a while, before it is replaced by an EV.
An larger, three row SUV above the Cayenne is expected to be on the market in the second decade. It will feature a plug-in hybrid engine and a completely new design.
