Porsche Vision 920 is a Le Mans Racer for The Road

It is a one-seat, low-tech hypercar.

Porsche is known for combining its race cars with their road-going vehicles. Even after the introductions of the Macan and Cayenne crossovers, the German automaker is known for its quest for pure performance. Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS and GT3 RS are examples of this blending. But Porsche has gone further. The Vision 920 was created by Porsche to further its sports-car-for-the-road philosophy. We are now seeing it for the first-time.

The design of the 920 looks more at home in Le Mans than it does in McDonald’s. Porsche’s latest super sports car, the 920, was created last year in 1:1 scale. Porsche wanted to create a car that could be driven on the road and at the track using LMP1 race cars. This was similar to its Porsche 919 LMP1 racing car. The result is a single-seat racer with an open cockpit that shouts “Take me to race track!”

This design was practical and easy to use. Because of the centrally-mounted cockpit, this design would make it difficult to do a simple grocery run. But, we wouldn’t change it if Porsche had designed it specifically for the track. It has “deep air conduits” running through it, which are likely to aid in handling and downforce. We can also see active aerodynamics bits just above the rear diffuser.

Porsche Vision 920 is just one of many concepts that have never been realized. The Porsche 904 Living Legend, and the Porsche Le Mans Living Legend are two other Porsches that the company is showing off. Both of these Porsches pay homage to the past. The Porsche Vision Renndienst, a boxy 1:1 model of an all electric MPV, is wild and quirky. It is always a pleasure to look behind the curtain and see the creativeness of car designers.
