However, the engines for the DLS cars are being built in the UK.
Although the headline may seem confusing, it is the real news. Singer is a California-based tuning firm that builds modernized, air-cooled Porsche 911s. The latter has agreed to take over the building of the engines Singer will use.
TopGear first discovered the information and then Track confirmed it. These two sources confirm that Porsche Motorsport North America, a Porsche division located at the Porsche Experience Center, Carson, California will build Singer’s engines according to Singer’s specifications. This means that the Stuttgart-based automaker will make engines for aftermarket firms to modify 911 models.
We are a bit surprised by this move, as it basically means that Singer has officially approved of his work. This is unusual in an industry where OEMs often tell their customers to only use original parts and not to rely on aftermarket services. Porsche will build Singer’s engines according to the tuning company’s specifications.
Singer’s specification will continue to define the characteristics of the engines, which are at the heart of each Singer car,” confirms a statement from the California-based company.
This agreement does not include the Singer-DLS cars. Williams Advanced Engineering will continue to build the engines for them in the UK, as Track reports. All other units included in the deal will be manufactured at Porsche Motorsport’s North America headquarters.
Singer and Porsche will only collaborate on engines, with future naturally-aspirated engine plans also being included. Singer’s first turbocharged car, rumored to be the first, could also be included in the agreement. However it’s too soon to confirm.
