Porsche’s platform will be featured in the all-electric Macan.
The VW Group’s transition from an all-electric automaker to electric will take more time than a decade. However, the company is already laying the foundations for this transition. It announced earlier this month that it is developing the Scalable System Platform, which will underpin a variety of future models. However, you won’t see it underpinning any Porsches. Automotive News reports that Porsche intends to keep its own platform.
Porsche currently develops the Premium Platform Electric architecture (PPE), alongside the first model to ride it, the electric Porsche Macan. The platform will be used to build several future Audis, such as the Q6 E-Tron. In 2018, , the two started together developing PPE. The SSP architecture of VW Group will be used to support mainstream products while Porsche’s will be used to support premium models. In 2025, the platform will be used to underpin new Bentley models , which is under Audi’s management.
Porsche is moving into electric cars, recently introducing the Taycan as well as the Taycan Cross Turismo. It shares the J1 platform with Audi for its new Etron GT. Porsche isn’t moving to electrify their lineup. Porsche stated last week that it does not plan to launch an all-electric 911. However, hybrid power will be available in the future. Porsche will have to electrify the 911 by 2030.
Although there is no information on the future models that will use the PPE architecture yet, Audi and Porsche intend to sell seven million PPE cars by 2030. Some models of Audi will continue to use the VW Group’s MEB platform, which is currently supporting the conglomerate’s electrification efforts. The MEB platform forms the basis of the VW ID line, which includes the new Audi Q4 E-Tron. We expect to see more discussion and news about the platforms these companies use as automakers shift towards producing electric cars.
