Some significant automotive news was recently reported from Washington D.C. On August 5, President Biden declared a goalto electrify half of all new US vehicle sales by 2030. You may not have known that he “deal” with the Chevrolet Corvette.
We missed it, truth be told. The White House was captured by The Hill via a tweet. The speech began outside the White House where top executives from Ford and General Motors were present. Mary Barra, GM CEO, was also present.
He said that he wanted to make it clear publicly that he had a commitment from Mary to me to drive the first electric Corvette when it is made. He continued by saying, “You think I’m kidding?” “I’m not kidding.”
We all know that Biden is a car guy. Biden was discussing the C8 Corvette and possibly leaked information about the car’s future electric. Because he was the original owner of the 1967 Stingray with the four-speed manual transmission, and the 327 cubic-inch (5.3 liter) V8 engine, he has a strong affection for the Corvette. He appeared on Jay Leno’s Garage in 2016 towards the end of his second term. The ‘Vette isn’t just a legacy of Apollo astronauts.
Biden’s executive order, which is non-binding, covers all forms of vehicle electrification in America. This includes hybrid and fully-electric models. We wonder if the deal with Barra is for a hybrid C8 which will likely be called the Zora or an electric-only Corvette, which may or not appear in the current generation.
