Prodrive P25 will be available for purchase starting May 25.
Prodrive has been a partner in Subaru’s World Rally Championship competition since the 1990s. A teaser was posted by the company, hinting that they might reveal something on May 25, which could be a revival this golden era for Subie.
The teaser image shows a simple line drawing that clearly shows what appears to be a mid-1990s Subaru Impreza. The wing design and the hood scoop closely match that of the car. The location of the B-pillar at the rear of the roofline suggests that it might be a coupe.
We have a theory about the P25 name. Prodrive could be spelled “P”. The number 25 could be a reference for an anniversary. In 1997, Subaru won its third consecutive World Rally Championship. Subaru built the Impreza 22B STI to celebrate the three titles. This model was an attempt to make a road-going version the 1997 rally car.
We are curious if Prodrive plans to pay tribute to the classic model given the similarities in the Prodrive teaser drawing and the 22B STI’s look.
Prodrive’s announcement comes at a perfect time, as Subaru will not be making a WRX STI in this generation. It said that it may return someday, perhaps with electrification. Despite Subaru’s aggressive concept of a modern STI at 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, this was not the case.
Later reports claimed that Subaru’s decision was due to the constantly changing regulations in the world. This would have affected the time the new STI was on the market. The automaker decided the investment was not worthwhile.
Prodrive is currently building 25 Hunter examples, which is a road-going variant of the BRX Hunter T1+ Dakar Rally vehicle. The Ford-sourced twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V6 engine produces over 600 horsepower. This engine is powerful enough to propel the machine off-road at 62 mph in just four seconds. Prices start at PS1.25 million.
