Wiesmann teased a new sports car when it returned to the market in August 2019. Although the Gecko was never made into a production car, the German sports car manufacturer is now ready to make another attempt. The first teaser images have been released by the automaker, which has its headquarters in Dulmen, Germany.
The official press release that was attached to the photos confirms that Wiesmann continues to be financed by Roheen Berry, an international entrepreneur. These photos show a Wiesmann roadster with a typical Wiesmann shape — a long, narrow hood, long front overhang, long rear overhang and a compact passenger compartment. This will be the company’s new model, according to Wiesmann. It will continue “the Wiesmann DNA” of timeless design elegance and stunningly refined performance.
Unfortunately, little information is available about the powertrain or its specifications. Roheen Berry stated that there may be something unexpected under the hood. He stated that the moment is right to announce the return of an iconic motoring icon, “as the automotive industry experiences its largest revolution in over a century,” he said. An electrified Wiesmann, perhaps?
Although we can’t confirm this for the moment, it is worth noting that the Gecko will be powered by a BMW-sourced twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 and mated with an eight-speed auto gearbox. In the summer of 2019, the first details were revealed about the sports car. It was expected that the coupe would reach speeds of 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds. We haven’t yet seen the production version of this car so these numbers are not accurate.
Roheen Berry, who was also speaking out about Project Thunderball, said that “this is Wiesmann ready for the 21st Century and this is just a beginning”. This means that the car will go into production and be followed by new models. Wiesmann promises that “full details” will soon be revealed.
