Rare Opportunity to Hear Mercedes-AMG One Sounding Like A F1 Car

Do a wide-open pass now.

Mercedes-AMG unveiled the One almost two years ago to great fanfare. This was 2017 and the hypercar looked great. The car had to overcome many obstacles. Delivery is not expected to begin until 2021. It’s two years away but the video of the One’s exhaust note was recorded on a potato.

The video is very short and follows the One as it cruises down what appears like a racetrack. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact location due to the video’s poor quality. But does it sounds quiet, almost too quiet? It boasts a modified 1.6-liter Formula 1 engine, paired with a hybrid system that gives it 1,000 horsepower (745 kilowatts).

Mercedes is behind schedule because of stricter emissions regulations and new sound rules. Rumours suggest that Mercedes has had great difficulties adapting its F1 engine to a street-legal vehicle. F1 engines are already finicky enough, so tighter emissions regulations and other new rules will not help. Instead of using an external starter, they don’t have any on-board starters.

The company will only build 275 Mercedes-AMGs when the Mercedes-AMG arrives. Every model has buyers so don’t forget your wallet. Each one has a cost of $2.7 million. This is a lot of money. Mercedes has much to do before the One can be delivered to customers. It is possible that the sound on the video may not be the same as the final product. The One may lack a powerful soundtrack, however, as Europe’s new noise regulations are already affecting Mercedes vehicles and potentially threatening Ferrari’s future V12 engines. Mercedes might have a solution.
