Renault And Mercedes Unveil New Turbocharged 1.3-Liter Engine

The TCe gasoline unit is available with three outputs and uses cylinder coating technology that was used in the Nissan GT-R’s motor.

A partnership with Daimler has resulted in the creation of a new 1.3-liter gasoline engine for Renault-Nissan Alliance. The four-cylinder unit, which has a displacement of 1,330cc, is available with manual or dual-clutch auto gearboxes. Other models with the diamond logo will also be able to receive the new Energy TCe unit.

The base Energy TCe 115 flavor will produce 115 horsepower (85 kilowatts), at 4,500 rpm, and a maximum 162 poundfeet (220 Newton meters) of torque from 1,500 rpm. The entry-level model will only be available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the others will be available with an optional seven-speed EDC.

Midrange Energy TCe 140 delivers 140 hp (103 kW), at 5,000 rpm, and 177 lbft (240Nm) starting at 1,600 rpm. The Energy TCe 160 is a powerful alternative for those who require more power. It delivers 160 hp (122 kW) at 5,500 rpm, and 192 lb (260 Nm), when connected to the manual transmission. You can choose the EDC to get an additional 8 lb-10 Nm, which will give you 200 lb (270 Nm) at 1,800 RPM.

The cylinder coating technology that was borrowed from the Nissan GT-R engine is an interesting aspect of the three-in-one gasoline engine TCe. It has improved efficiency by optimizing heat transfer and decreasing friction, according to Renault. The four-cylinder also features a Dual Variable Timing Camshaft that improves low-end torque as well as delivering more linear torque at higher rpms.

It’s not difficult to imagine that the engine will be available in the next generation of compact cars, given Mercedes’s involvement in the project. In just a few months, we should know when the new A Class will be officially unveiled.
