It wasn’t what Renault had hoped for.

At the beginning of this year, Volkswagen stopped production of the Passat sedan. Now Renault follows suit with its sedan. The Wolfsburg folks are still making the wagon but the French have stopped making the long-roof version. The Talisman has been utterly stricken. The Talisman was already dead for some time when the company sporting the diamond logo announced that it would drop the midsize car in December 2021.

The Renault Talisman was discontinued at the end February, but sedans remain in the company’s portfolio. You can still find the Megane Sedan in select countries as well as the smaller Taliant which is a rebadged Dacia Logan. The Renault Megane Estate is now the only wagon left after the supermini switched over to the fifth generation in 2019.

Renault has no plans to produce a replacement for sedans, as they are obsolete. Rumours suggest that the Passat sedan will not be returning for the next generation. The Opel Insignia will be transformed into an SUV, while the new Chinese Ford Mondeo won’t be arriving in Europe.

Although the fate of the 508 remains to be determined, we are hopeful that it will remain on the market as it is one of the most desirable cars currently available. Although the Citroen has technically been returned, its formula has changed to be a wagon/crossover hybrid. We are hopeful that Mazda will bring the next generation 6 to Europe with a rear-wheel drive platform. Toyota’s Camry Hybrid is sold in this region, but it’s not a popular model.

The next Skoda Superb is now poised to be the most loved midsize sedan in mainstream segment. Czech brand confirms that the wagon will be around for another generation. This is good news for those who are against the SUV. The VW Group’s final combustion engines will be installed in the iconic model, which will be constructed in Bratislava (Slovakia).
