Report: Mercedes CLS could be dropped in the United States

Report: Mercedes CLS could be dropped in the United StatesThe E-Class Coupe Coupe and Convertible could be eliminated by a simplified US lineup.

Mercedes knows that it is trying to reduce its global lineup in order to cut costs. The money will be spent elsewhere, including funding its ambitious EV programme. The SLC roadster and the S-Class Coupe have been discontinued. The three-pointed star suggested last month that will not be another C-Class Coupe or Convertible. Plans for a four-door, swoopy sedan, dubbed CLC, were also scrapped.

It turns out that additional models are in danger of being cut, at least in the United States. According to Automotive News, “people who are familiar with the plans” said that the future of the CLS is not looking bright. Mercedes sells both the mechanically related E-Class Sedan as well as the more sporty GT 4-Door Coupe.

Although the identity of this model has not been revealed, it could be the AMG GT Convertible. This is because the new soft-top Roadster will be available later in the year exclusively as an AMG-branded model. These cars may be discontinued in the near future, or at the end the current model’s life cycle.

Mercedes needs to reduce its US offerings, considering that there are more than 100 models if you include all available engines and body styles. The 2021 S Class is an example of Mercedes’s plans to reduce its range by offering 86 percent less configurations than its predecessor. The new luxobarge offers three trim levels of luxobarge: Executive Line, Luxury Line and AMG Line. Instead of offering a multitude of options, it bundles them all in one package.

Mercedes will soon be launching a variety of electric vehicles to complement the EQC that was launched in 2019, and the EQA which was revealed earlier this year. The EQB, EQE and EQS will follow in 2021. Mercedes also plans to unveil the HTML22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%222021-mercedes-eqa-unveiled/EQA for 2022.

A fully electric version of the C-Class Sedan is also in the works, but that won’t happen until 2025. The gas-guzzling G-Class will produce an EV counterpart over the next years. It’s clear that Mercedes’ lineup will undergo major changes in the coming decade.
