Report: Next-Gen Porsche Boxster, Cayman Going Pure Electric

To bridge the gap, current-gen cars will be offered hybrid or plug-in versions.

It is only a matter time before Porsche electrifies its core sports car, 911. It appears that the Boxster, and Cayman duo will get a charging port. A new report by Autocar indicates that the Stuttgart-based marque has given green light to pure electric versions for the entry-level sports cars.

This new data was obtained by the British magazine only a month and half after an identical report by Which Car about the possibility of an electrical Boxster/ Cayman. In an interview with Autocar, Oliver Blume, Porsche chairman, revealed that the company has already tested pure electric 718 prototypes and is currently working on hybrid 718.

He said that they are still not sure if the cars will get plug-in hybrids or hybrid setups. However, the plan is for Boxster and Cayman EVs to be sold alongside the electrified versions. The report also states that the completely electric models will switch to Porsche’s new PPE platform, while hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives may keep the existing underpinnings but with electrification.

This sounds familiar? It’s because Porsche is doing the same thing with the Macan . The Macan will continue to use its existing hardware while it hybridizes and spawns a PPE-based Macan E.

The hybrid Boxster and Cayman are unknown, but they will have a flat-four engine. The hybrid 911 will be powered by a six-cylinder unit.

A new Porsche hypercar, which will serve as the successor to the 918 SPyder hybrid, is expected to be the pinnacle of Porsche’s electrification efforts. It is expected to arrive in the middle of next decade. It may also feature solid-state batteries, which will allow for longer range and lighter weight.
