Other Subie’s will also get turbo engines of 1.5- and1.8-liter.

According to Japanese website Car Sensor, the next-gen Subaru and Subaru WRX will both use the brand’s 2.4-liter turbocharged flat four engine. By 2021, 80 percent of the automaker’s lineup will be powered by three turbocharged powerplants.

The FA24 turbo flat-four 2.4-liter turbo turbo is familiar from models such as the Ascent and Legacy. The engine produces 260 horsepower (194 Kilowatts) as well as 277 pound feet of torque (376 Newton-meters), in all three models. The new WRX STI and WRX STI use a high output version of this mill.
Rumors suggest that the high-output FA24 could produce 400 horsepower (298 kW), and 361 lb.ft (490 Nm), of torque. Parts like stronger internals and different valves would be needed to handle the additional power.

Three reasons are reportedly given for switching to FA24 for next-gen WRX or STI. It’s faster than older engines. Subie is also less concerned about international motorsports, where the rule favors a 2.0-liter displacement. People outside Japan are familiar with a WRX STI powered by a 2.5-liter engine and are therefore more comfortable driving a larger displacement engine.

They would still be able to use a six-speed manual. Car Sensor states that the current CVT can only handle 295 lb/ft (400 Nm). Subie’s plans for this matter are not known.
