Volkswagen indicated that they are considering making an announcement at Detroit’s auto show in January.
According to U.S. auto mag Auto and Driver, the Volkswagen GolfR may soon be heading stateside.
The report says that VW is still considering the matter, but the German automaker will most likely announce the decision at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
The Golf R is powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI engine that produces 270 PS (266 horsepower / 199kW) and 350 Nm (258lb-ft). You can choose from a 3- or 5-door body style. It has all-wheel drive and VW’s 4Motion technology.
The US introduction of the Golf R would allow for more R-badged VW models to enter the market. This includes the Scirocco R a front-wheel-drive coupe with the same engine configuration.
VW must add emotion to its brand if it wants to sell 1,000,000 units per year in the United States by 2018. This means bringing R models to America is the best way to do this.
VW created the R GmbH performance department earlier this year to produce sport variants that are more than just a few of its models. The current lineup includes the Scirocco R and Golf R models, but VW will likely expand the range as it considers the possibility of adding a Polo R or a Jetta R to the mix.
