Restored Mercedes Unimog With Engine Swap and So Much More

Because the gearshift pattern of the car is so complex, don’t be alarmed if someone steals it.

The Unimog It can do any job that a person puts it to, and Mike Day, the builder of this machine, has made sure it will continue to work for many years. This video will show you what makes this machine so unique.
This Unimog 404 is a model that was produced between 1955 and 1980. Day’s setup makes Day’s pickup a huge truck. Day can either lower the tailgate as any other truck, or remove the entire side for an open area. These sections can double as ramps. This rig is great for summer fun, as the roof and doors can be removed. You can also open a small vent to allow air conditioning to circulate.

Day’s Unimog is most notable for its powertrain. He swapped the original gasoline-fueled engine for a later turbodiesel engine from a Mercedes Benz. It is driven by a manual gearbox that has six forward and two reverse gears. The four-wheel drive system is activated by a lever in the middle tunnel.

Unimog’s suspension design is different than most passenger cars. The cab and rear sections have rubber joints that allow them to flex. This gives the Unimog lots of off-road flexibility. Portal axles are available to increase ground clearance when the road becomes rough.

Day’s Unimog’s cab is painted in an attractive shade of orange. The interior can be accessed by stepping on the wheels. The rig appears narrower because he cuts some of the length from the bumpers and fenders.
