However, don’t expect to see it too soon.
General Motors’ first quarter financial results were announced by Mary Barra, CEO. She revealed that the company has an electric pickup in its plans during the investor call. According to Slash Gear, she did not give any details on the brand that would sell the model.
GMC Vice President Duncan Aldred said in a January interview that the possibility for the electric truck was something they were considering. Barra’s new statement indicates that the company is continuing to work on the model.
The GM electric pickup would be a strong contender against the upcoming EV trucks. Tesla has an entry about the way, but the vehicle is still many years away. Test mules for the electric Ford F-150 have been put on the road but are still prototypes.
Rivian could be the automaker that really breaks into the electric truck market. The R1T could be available as early as 2021, and could provide as as 400 miles of driving distance. Rivian has tested mules on the roads, but the company hides them as Ford F-150s.
Rivian also recently received $500 million from Ford. The pair announced plans for a co-development of a vehicle on Rivian’s skateboard platform. This model is not part of the electric F-150. However, a date has not yet been set for product launch.
GM still has a few years to wait before the electric pickup is ready for sale, as none of these rivals are coming soon. The General plans to build an EV model using the improved Chevrolet Bolt chassis at the Orion plant in Michigan. Rumours suggest that the model could be a cross-over.
