This EV can off-road. We were aware of this, but it is quite impressive.
If there aren’t any production delays, the Rivian electric SUV will be available for sale later in the year. RJ Scaringe, CEO, and his team will be testing the EV before it arrives in customers’ driveways. This includes some light off-roading on one of America’s most difficult terrains.
Scaringe uploaded a video to Twitter showing a camouflaged R1S prototype scaling a steep rocky slope in Moab (Utah). The rubber screeches up for grip as the rubber lightly touches the rock. The R1S manages the obstacle with relative ease, although it’s difficult to see how steep the incline is. We knew that the R1S was capable. Rivian claims that the SUV can traverse most terrains with a 14.0 inch ground clearance. It can also drive through water up to three feet high, as well as rock crawl at 100 percent grade. This is a better ground clearance than the Ford Bronco (11,6 inches) or Jeep Wrangler (0.8 inches). The R1S is larger and more powerful than the Bronco or Wrangler. It weighs in at 5,842 pounds base, has a wheelbase 121.1 inches and measures 200.7 inches total length. It’s also more powerful, with 800 horsepower available in the range-topping specification (although it’s not clear which version is being filmed). The Rivian R1S SUV will be available later in the year at a price of $70,000 and provide 300 miles (483 km) of range. The Adventure model will be available in mid-range with a premium interior, and some additional options. It starts at $75,500.
