According to rumors, the models will include a new Lexus coupe that fits between the RC-LC.
According to unnamed insiders at Best car Japan, the future generation of Toyota and Lexus vehicles will likely source their rear-drive platform from Mazda and inline-six engines from Mazda. These models could be available as early as 2022.
Toyota plans to use the Mazda-sourced rear drive platform and inline six engine first on a successor of its MarkX premium sedan (pictured below). These parts will be used by Lexus on a new coupe, which would fit between the existing RC or LC.
Best Car suggests that Lexus may use the Mazda-sourced platform for a while. According to the report, the next-gen Lexus IS and RC would ride on the TGNA chassis with a v6 engine. However, the model following would be equipped with the Mazda inline-six motor.
Mazda presented its March 2019 report to investors. It included plans to create an inline six-cylinder engine with Skyactiv-X technology. In the same report, Mazda announced plans to develop a large vehicle architecture that could support both rear- and all-wheel drive models. The outline of the automaker showed that it intends to release new components in 2020-2025.
This lends credence to the rumor that Toyota Mazda has a close working relationship. The new Yaris has very close links with the Mazda2. The pair also have a partnership to construct a $1.6 million factory in Alabama to initially build the Toyota Corolla, and a Mazda crossover. Although rumors have swirled about a Toyota-Mazda merger, execs deny the possibility.
