The Saab name is a well-known one that’s part of automotive history. Although the 2001 Saab 9X Concept represented a hopeful vision under GM, it was hampered by a series of obstacles that caused the Swedish marque to fail.
Ernst Hellby relates those memories and shows us how he imagines a Saab return through a series of renderings. It’s a what-if-SAAB-was-back dream for him, and the resulting crossover utility vehicle actually looks good in our eyes.
Hellby stated that he was inspired by classic artifacts he found in his childhood home, such as the Bruno Mathsson chair Pernilla and the Margaretha Bowls from Sigvard Bernadotte. He also created these renderings some of his favorite cars.
The 9-X concept was the inspiration for the rendering’s swoopy frontlines. Although there are many cues that come from the concept two decades ago, Hellby also increased the proportions to something remarkable without losing the realist feel.
He wants people to be able to drive the Saab that he created, according to him. The vehicle also features sporty cues that are based on Saab Aero models. These cues were primarily inspired by the fictional car’s attitude and stance. We think the wheels are quite nice, although we do agree that they are too large.
Although it seems unlikely that Saab will make a comeback, it is still fun to think about the would-haves and could-haves of a failing car brand. A Saab return nameplate will most likely feature an electric motor, given the current European environmental climate. This is in contrast to the Swedish fossil-fueled machines we know.
