It is also out of the plan to build a sports coupe.
Mazda has introduced the CX-60 as the first model of the next-generation Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture models. This RWD architecture can support six-cylinder engines as well as plug-in hybrid powertrains. rumors have circulated about the next-generation Mazda6 moving to rear-wheel drive. The new crossover also fuelled speculation. However, it appears that the sedan will not be powered by its rear wheels anytime soon.
Joachim Kunz, the Mazda Europe engineering and development boss, recently spoke to Autocar. He acknowledged that an RWD Mazda6 is a great idea, but the market has changed significantly in recent years and it’s more important to sell crossovers and SUVs than a premium sedan. Contrary to previous reports, Kunz has ruled out a Mazda rear-wheel-drive sedan.
Kunz stated that it would be nice to have the FR concept (front-engined, rear-driven) and six-cylinder engine for a Mazda6 successor. We would love to have it but it is important to sell SUVs at the moment. Mazda is seeing an SUV trend that’s even stronger. It’s the best selling model.
We understand that the current Mazda6 will continue to be sold for at least a few years. Alastair Doak, Mazda Australia’s marketing director, recently told that “there are some updates in the pipeline” and said that the current generation Mazda6 will continue to be available for sale for at least a few more years.
Autocar has ruled out the Mazda6 RWD. Autocar reports that the rumored RX-9 coupe will not materialize. Rumours have swirled that Mazda would develop a two-door Mazda6 with the same RWD platform as the CX-60 crossover and powered by the latest generation of inline-6 engines.
