According to reports, the latter will have level 2 autonomous driving capabilities.
SEAT plans to launch a new vehicle every six months, starting in 2020. This will lead to the company’s first fully electric vehicle that year. The company has so far delivered on its promises, with new SUVs such as the Cupra Ateca and teaser images of its Tarraco. An all-new Leon model is in development, but it won’t be available for at least another one year.
According to the company, the third generation Leon will be made available in 2019, and a plug-in hybrid version will be available in 2020. According to the company, the plug-in powertrain can provide a pure electric range of just 31 miles (50 km). This will be the brand’s first electric vehicle, ahead of the EV assault by the Spanish marque later in the year.
“2020 will mark SEAT’s Year of Electrification,” stated CEO Luca de Meo.
The MQB platform underpinning cars such as the VW Golf and Audi A3, will be used for the new Leon. The Leon will have a slightly longer wheelbase than its predecessors, which will allow for more rear-cabin space. The three-door model will be eliminated from the lineup. Only the five-door ST estate and the ST estate will remain. The new Leon will be available with the standard 1.0- and 1.5 liter gas engines, along with a 1.6 liter diesel.
After the Leon’s debut, SEAT will debut its first fully electric vehicle in 2020. According to reports, it will have a range of 310 mi (500 km), as well as the most advanced connectivity and infotainment systems available on the market. It will also include a minimum level 2 autonomous driving capability.
