Although nothing is official, the video does show an impressive lap.
Two Model S sedans are seen accelerating around the track in this video. The Plaid, or Plaid+, is the top video. It unofficially lapped Tesla’s track in 1:29.9, surpassing Tesla’s previous lap of 1:30. The Plaid or Dual Motor model laps the track in 1:32.6. McLaren Senna currently holds the lap record for production cars at the track, with a time of 1:27.6.
Tesla unveiled a major refresh of the Model S earlier this year and introduced the new Plaid+ performance trim. New battery cells are now part of the Plaid+ vehicle structure. The new batteries provide a range of 520 miles (836 km) and a time between 0-60 in a fraction of 1.2 seconds. Tesla is believed to be testing the Plaid+ and Plaid+ trims before they are available for sale.
The news that Tesla may have broken the Laguna Seca lap record comes days after another report said that the Model S Plaid had broken the quarter-mile record. The time would make it the fastest production car in the world, if true. According to the report, the car clocked in at 9.23 seconds and travelled the quarter-mile at 152.16 mph (244.88 km/h). The Laguna Seca and quarter-mile track times of Tesla are not yet official, but if they are, Tesla could be a performance beast.
