It is more boxy than the current models, and could or might not be an electric vehicle.
Today was Skoda’s turn after the annual media conferences of most other Volkswagen Group brands earlier in the month. The only interesting tidbit that was revealed at the livestreamed event online this morning was the vague promise to a new design language called “Modern Solid.” It will be revealed more in the second half, but the Czech marque shared a teaser photo.
The official rendering is intentionally blurred and appears to show a crossover. It could be positioned below Enyaq and Kodiaq, as shown below in the “coupe” guise. We believe it is about the same size as the compact. Karoq The closed-off front fascia and short overhangs suggest that it might be electric. Although it is not clear if this is a production model, or a concept, Skoda’s method of operation suggests that it could be another Vision-badged showcar.
Skoda previously stated that three new EVs would be available by the end the decade. All will be smaller and cheaper than the Enyaq. Today’s press conference saw the departure of Thomas Schafer, Skoda’s CEO. He confirmed that one of them would be an entry-level city vehicle. It’s impossible that this is the case, as it seems much larger than the Citigo-e iV.
An additional sign that this is an EV is the one piece headlight, denoted by the vertical LED strip to indicate daytime running lights. Skoda’s conventionally powered crossovers still use a split headlight assembly. The mysterious vehicle’s back appears to have a thin lightbar. The car looks a little more boxy than we are used to seeing in Mlada Boleslav products.
Skoda’s new “Modern Solid” design approach will change our assumptions. This will be revealed later in the year. Perhaps the 2022 Paris Motor Show will be where we see the concept. We will find out in the future.
