The idea was shut down by a senior member of the VW board.
Skoda filed trademarks in June for the Superb and Octavia and Yeti. It also filed trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It sparked rumors about the arrival of the Czech automaker in the U.S. However, it seems that our hopes of Skoda arriving in the USA have been shattered just a few months after.
Although the company is still considering the idea at headquarters and looking for a way of filling the gaps in the current VW lineups, a new interview with a top VW board member suggests that Skoda will not be coming to the US. He said Automobile Magazine, “We may seem crazy, but it’s not mad.”
He said, “Entering into this market with an unknown brand and a model range that is focused on Europe and a nonexistent dealer network, is pure suicide.” “Furthermore Volkswagen of America doesn’t need in-house cannibalization.”
We may not see Skoda in the U.S. any time soon, but we will see new offerings from the Czech automaker in the coming years for Europe. The new Polar SUV will replace an aging Yeti and will ride on the same MQB platform that underpins cars such as the VW Golf, Tiguan and Skoda Octavia.
In 2020, the new Superb sedan, along with the three row Kodiaq SUV, will be available in plug-in hybrid and electrical variants. Five zero-emission Skoda models may be available by 2025… but not in the U.S.
