It is roughly the same size as the Mini Countryman.
Smart first explored the idea of a crossover at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, when he presented the Formore concept. Due to financial difficulties experienced by DaimlerChrysler, the small utility vehicle mechanically similar to the Mercedes GLK did not see the light of day. The Smart crossover is now back in production.
Things have changed dramatically since 16 years ago. Smart is now a 50/50 joint venture between Daimler & Geely The struggling city car manufacturer will be revived. Smart’s Concept #1, which was unveiled today, not only signals an EV-only future but also highlights Smart’s goal to launch significantly larger cars than the tiny ForTwo or ForFour.
It is huge! The new Smart crossover concept measures 4.29 meters (168.1 inches) in length, 1.91 meters (75.1 inch) wide and 1.70 meters (66.7 inches tall). It is approximately the same size as the Mini Countryman. It was designed as an EV-only model, with very short rear and front overhangs.
Smart will offer a subcompact electric crossover that can accommodate a third rear-facing seat. This is to signal its intention to sell cars in higher segments. The details of the rear suicide doors, which are only for the Munich showcar, have not been revealed.
Concept #1 was designed by Daimler. It will be built using Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture. The interior is significantly different from other Smart cars, with a minimalist cabin dominated by a 12.8-inch touchscreen.
Along with support for fast-charging tech, over-the-air updates and long range, the next-gen infotainment systems are being promised. Smart claims that the production version will be equipped with the “highest level” of dynamic handling, which shows Daimler and Geely’s desire to make the company look like a mature brand.
The production-ready electric crossover was made in China and will be on sale next year. It will also be available in Europe.
