Sony claims it isn’t getting into car-making.
We were surprised by the Vision-S from Sony earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show. The concept car was designed to show off the company’s many automotive technologies in a sleek package. It wasn’t the only car made by Sony. Shortly after the unveiling, a video showing the Vision-S briefly showed the front clip for a crossover-like sibling. We now have exclusive renderings of the Sony crossover, which is just as elegant and sleek as the sedan.
We can see a small part of the renderings in the video. It features sleek headlights and a closed-off grille with subtle chrome trim. Although the Vision-S front ends are similar, the design of the other vehicle featured distinct front-end styling. These renderings show that the Vision-S crossover retains the Vision-S sedan’s sharp design lines down the sides and the fender vent.
The styling is most striking at the rear. The Vision-S had a sloped roof that fell to the rear fascia. However, the Vision-S cross-over has an extended roof which creates the liftgate. Rear quarter panels also kick up, as seen in the D-pillar and side windows. Although you can only see the taillights from the sedan, they are very similar in design.
Sony’s Vision-S was a way to pack all of its most innovative automotive technologies in an attractive package. The sedan had 33 sensors inside and out. It was designed to provide advanced autonomous driving capabilities powered by an all-electric motor. Sony did not provide any details on the sedan’s performance but stated that it could travel 62 miles an hour (100 km per hour) in just 4.8 seconds.
Sony insists that it isn’t looking to get into the car-building industry. However, the company continues to develop the car alongside Magna Steyr and plans to have the car ready to go for public road tests. A crossover version of the Vision-S would be a great idea considering the excitement surrounding it.
