As a race car, a brand new BMW 335i (F30), equipped with BMW Performance parts, has been revealed for the first time in South Africa.
BMW South Africa and ADF Motorsport will be competing for the first time at the Wesbank Super Series race meeting at Killarney, Cape Town, 31 March 2012. Then, they will race at the 2012 Nurburgring 24-hour racing later in the year.
The BMW 335i race car weighs in at just over 1,360 kilograms (2,998 lbs). It retains the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine and standard internal parts. All modifications include various BMW M Performance parts. However, the engine management system, exhaust system, and turbocharger modifications are all in line with race regulations.
The MoTeC engine control system is used to make the 335i the first race car in the world that can run direct injection. The turbo system was tuned to run at a lower boost (maximum of 0.7 bar) and has a 40mm restriction on the turbo intake. The engine still produces more power than the standard specs, which are 306 PS (225kW / 302 HP) and 400 Nm (295lb-ft).
Other race enhancements include 18-inch BBS wheels, Akrapovic exhaust system, and 370mm M performance front disk brakes.
ADF Motorsport built the 335i racecar in six weeks for R2-million ($260,000).
