We would love to see a modern 22B.
Rain Prisk, a rendering artist, created this vision of a Subaru 22B STI. It is called Subaru 2022b by him.
Prisk begins with the most recent WRX. The nose is largely unchanged, with the exception of a prominent splitter. He also adds a red Subaru badge to the grille, just like the 22B.
Prisk’s car is also adorned with bronze-colored wheels and Y-shaped spokes, in another nod to the original. He gives them a more aggressive look with a more dished design.
The major difference is, of course, that this rendering transforms the new WRX in to a coupe. Prisk replaces the rear doors with a point at which the fenders flare outward. The roofline is the same right up to the B-pillar. Prisk then gives the top an angular shape that matches the original.
Prisk renders Subaru 2022b only from the front three quarter angle. We can’t see the rear. The tall wing he adds to the rear deck is the same as the original model.
Subaru introduced the 22B in 1998 in celebration of the brand’s 1997 World Rally Championship title. For the Japanese market , a limited edition of 400 units was produced by the company. The UK had 16 units and Australia had 5.
These models were powered by a turbocharged flat four engine of 2.2 liters with forged pistons. The factory reported that the output was 276 horsepower (206 megawatts) due to the gentleman’s agreement between Japanese automakers at that time. However, it is possible that the actual output was higher. It produced 268 pound-feet (363 Newton meters or 37.0 kilogram-force metres) of torque.
The 5-speed manual gearbox was upgraded with a reinforced main shaft and second drive. A twin-plate ceramic-metal clutch was also added to the model.
The 22B is a highly collectible piece that can fetch six-figure sums.
