Subaru Ascent May Donate Stronger Engine For Next-Gen BRZ, Toyota 86

Do you think it will be turbocharged or naturally aspirated.

We know that a turbocharged Toyota 86/ Subaru BRZ engine is unlikely to occur on the current platform for the sports car duo. We are certain that the Japanese automakers aren’t planning to boost the 2.0-liter engine which produces 205 horsepower (153kilowatts), and 156 pound feet (211 Newton-meters). If we believe the latest report from Japan’s Best Car (which was brought to our attention by The Drive), an increase could be possible with the new generation of 86/BRZ.

According to the publication, the coupes could swap the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine for Subaru’s 2.4 liter FA24 engine. This engine is currently in the Ascent SUV. The report does not specify whether the new motor will use a turbocharger or naturally aspirated. There are two options available for the new BRZ/86.

The first engine is a 2.4-liter unit without turbocharger. It could produce around 220-230 horsepower (164-171kW), TheDrive suggests. Although it isn’t the power boost that many people are looking for, it is a substantial improvement over the current 205 horsepower (153 kW) engine. Subaru and Toyota may also consider using a forced-induction motor. The Ascent has 260 horsepower (194 kW) & 277 lb-ft (376Nm).

It’s not the first time that rumors have circulated about the larger engine for the sports car duo. Similar information was also released in April of last year. The Japan Times reported that the center gravity would drop to improve handling. According to reports, improved driver assistance systems are also on the horizon.

The new generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 should be available by next year, or 2021 at the earliest. Sources claim that the companies could show off their production models and concepts at next year’s Tokyo Motor Show, which is scheduled for the second week of February.
