There is no turbo for you.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ receives a complete styling overhaul with an upgraded mill slipped underneath the hood. The new engine, which is a 2.4-liter flat four, produces more power than the 2.0-liter model. However, it lacks a turbocharger. Dominick Infante, Subaru PR chief, explained to Road & Track the reason the company kept the naturally-aspirated engine – performance.
Infante stated that bringing the turbocharger for the 2.4-liter engine from the Ascent to the BRZ This would have a negative impact on the car’s overall performance. Subaru Mounting the turbocharger at the bottom of the mill would raise the car’s center gravity as the mill would be higher. The price of a turbocharger will increase the car’s weight as well as the hardware required. Its handling would be affected by its higher center of gravity and heavier weight.
This new mill should provide plenty of power for most people. The 2.4-liter engine generates 228 horsepower (170 Kilowatts) as well as 184 pound-feet (249 Newton meters) of torque. This is an increase of 23 horsepower and 28 lbft, respectively. Customers should feel this as the engine reaches its peak torque figure at 3,700rpm. This is lower than the 6,400-rpm peak. The 2022 model was lighter than its predecessor, adding just 17 pounds.
Although the new BRZ rides on the same platform as the predecessor, Subaru did make some improvements to the platform to increase stiffness and responsiveness. The turbocharger would likely have increased the cost. We don’t know exactly what Subaru would like for it to cost, but we think it will start at $27,000. This is similar to other cars in the same segment, such as the $26,580 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata. We will have more information about the car’s sale date, which is next fall.
