Since 1967, when a Cobra hit 198 mph, the record has stood.
The Shelby Cobra has gotten more expensive, and companies like Superformance are now offering replicas to provide drivers with the same performance at a lower price. Superformance’s MkIII model can offer even greater speed to customers, with one of its models recently achieving a staggering 201.1 miles an hour at the Mojave Space Port. This was in addition to earning the title as the fastest legal Cobra.
Ted Taormina refers to his Superformance MkIII as the Italian Job. It has red, white and green stripes running down its body in honor of the country’s flag. Taormina is one of many Superformance customers who customize their roadsters. The Shelby Engines’ 427FE V8 makes 690 horsepower (515 Kilowatts) as well as 710 pound-feet (963 Newton meters) of torque. A front spoiler, canards and diffuser are included for improved aerodynamics. Aluminum panels are used to seal the underside of your vehicle for stability. The springs and shocks can be tuned to reduce fore- and aft motions when you accelerate.
Taormina had to prepare for months before he could get his car to these incredible speeds. The Cobra was able to reach speeds of 169 mph (272 km/h) and 190.1 MPH (306 km/h) in earlier passes. Taormina broke the speed record of a road-legal Cobra by hitting 201 mph. This was a new record that Taormina set in 1967, when Dick Smith reached 198 mph (319 kph), in the car serial number CSX3035.
Superformance offers Cobra replicas in a variety of colors. They also offer reproductions of the Shelby Daytona Coupe and original Ford GT40. These machines are impressive.
