Suzuki Jimny Going Away In Europe, Returning As Commercial Vehicle

The SUV’s small size makes it too polluting for Europe’s new strict emissions regulations.

The tiny Suzuki Jimny is probably not on your list of vehicles that can’t meet emission standards. Autocar India reported that Suzuki would drop the Jimny because it doesn’t comply with new emission regulations. These regulations are due to go into effect next year. It won’t completely disappear due to loopholes, but a revamped version could be on the horizon.

Automakers must adhere to the European Union’s 2021 emission regulations. The Jimny’s 1.5-liter gasoline engine produces surprising high levels of C02 despite being small. This is combined with the fact that it is a very popular vehicle. According to some reports, wait times for a new Jimny can be as long as a year in certain areas. Suzuki’s overall average also takes a hit.

The Jimny will be ending its European tour in 2015, but here’s the catch. However, the standard passenger version of the Jimny will not be available. Commercial Version with minimal interior changes and no rear seating will be available in 2021. The same emission standards are not applicable to commercial vehicles, so you could say that Suzuki is using the system to its maximum extent. The regulations are not applicable to commercial vehicles. Autocar India Reports also suggest that a fully-fledged passenger version will be available with a new engine. However, it is not known when this might occur.

We are still not privy the Jimny magic on the U.S. markets. The U.S. does not see any Suzuki models. The automaker left the market in 2012, even though the Jimny was not part of its lineup. We sympathize with the Jimny-less friends from across the pond. For a while at least.
