This is some serious dinero to pick up from Detroit.
100 years ago, Ford introduced its first pickup truck. It was based on the Model T and was called the Model TT. The truck’s frame could hold one ton of cargo. The TT, like the Model T was a vehicle meant for the working class. It sold for $600 which is about $12,500 in today’s market.
The most expensive 2018 Ford F-150 is almost six times as much, or $71,185, according to Ford’s online configurator. You can get a loaded (and we mean fully loaded 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor ), but that is a very expensive truck. Let’s look at the close second: A $70,890 F-150 Limited SuperCrew. It has a four-wheel drive and a 5-1/2-foot bed. The EcoBoost V6 engine is mated to a 10-speed auto. These trucks are so close to the new BMW 7 Series that we don’t see many working-class people driving them.
The F-150 is also available in working-class trim. The base-model F-150 XL with single-cab, two-wheel drive configuration costs $28,675. But keep in mind that this is a work truck with vinyl floors and an AM/FM stereo. The XLT adds a little more bling and basic power for $34,265. We think most people would choose the XLT.
We added $5,650 worth options to the Limited’s base price of $63,945 to get to $70,000. This includes leather everywhere, cameras everywhere and enough electronic gadgetry for Mars. A trailer tow package (995), a hard-tonneau bed cover (995) and White Platinum paint (595) are some of the notable extras. The Limited’s base price is $63,945 and includes a 36-gallon fuel tanks ($445) and many convenience features such as a bed divider and tailgate step, a bed extender, floormats and other small tidbits. These items average about $200 each. What’s a hundred dollars more if you spend 70 grand on a truck?
