The 2018 Toyota Camry will sport a new look both on and off the track.
Toyota’s latest Camry was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Monday. Next month, it will compete in motorsports at Daytona Speedweeks.
“The 2018 Toyota Camry NASCAR racecar has been years in making. To unveil it simultaneously alongside our new production Camry was a landmark moment for our company,” Ed Laukes, Vice President, Integrated Marketing Operations, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A. said.
“Reimagining the Camry race car as well as its production counterpart was a huge undertaking. Our goal was to keep parallel design characteristics so that our fans can drive a Camry that is very similar to the one they love racing each weekend in NASCAR.”
Masato Katsumata, Camry’s chief designer, oversaw the project along with engineers from Calty Design Research, Inc., Toyota’s North American design studio, and Toyota Racing Development (TRD). Calty and TRD worked closely with NASCAR in order to ensure that the race car reflects the same characteristics as the model in the showroom.
Calty collaborated with TRD on the evolution of Camrys in NASCAR’s Gen6 Project in 2013.
Toyota In 2007, the NASCAR Cup made its debut. After winning 16 races, including the Daytona 500, the company won its first manufacturer title. Over the past ten years, Toyota drivers have won 95 races in NASCAR’s top division.
