The 508 is an impressive car, and we hope it will be as good with the new supermini.
The next-generation Peugeot 208 will be introduced as a five door-only hatchback at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. Although preliminary details have been posted on the internet, we are still not sure what it will look like. Although spy photos have been released, they show an early test mule with a modified body from the current car.
It is possible to speculate that the design of the 508 will be replicated on the B-segment model. We are optimistic as we find the new Peugeot flagship model to be stunning. The speculative rendering shows the 208 in GT trim, with a sharp exterior that is heavily influenced by the company’s fastback.
We have borrowed the 508 GT’s red hot paint as well as its two-tone alloy wheels, and shiny grille. The “208” badge sits above the lion logo and is inspired by Peugeot’s midsize model. Our imaginary supermini has inherited the character lines and the stylish LED daytime running lamps that extend all the way to the ground.
We know that the next generation will be built on the PSA Group’s CMP platform, but we also know it will use the e-CMP architecture. This refers to electric cars. Rumours suggest that Peugeot will make a zero emission 208 GTi. This won’t mean the end for the conventionally-powered hot hatch, as the plan is still to offer the performance hatch in both ICE or EV versions.
Switching to PSA’s Common Modular Platform will allow you to lose up to 100 kg (220 pounds). This will be a huge benefit in terms of efficiency as well as performance. It is even more impressive to consider that the new model will weigh in at least 100 kilograms less than the old one. Some reports also suggest that the wheelbase will be longer, which should allow for more legroom.
The redesigned Peugeot 208 will be on sale in Europe in the summer after its debut in Geneva. The GTi, which is beefier, should be available in 2020.
