The 2019 VW Jetta is now more comfortable than ever with a new powertrain and a sleeker body. It gets 40 MPG.

The new Jetta is significantly more fuel-efficient than the old model.

The all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has a sleeker body and an eight-speed automatic transmission. This makes it more fuel efficient than the previous model. The new Jetta can be equipped with either an automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. It is rated at 30 mpg city, 40 mpg highway and 34 mpg together. The 2018 Jetta was rated at between 27 and 33 MPG combined depending on the powertrain.

The 1.4-liter turbo-powered 2018 Jetta returned 28/40 mpg using a five speed manual transmission and 28/38 with the six-speed auto. Other Jetta engines with optional turbo-mills of 1.8- or 2.0-liter rated worse in economy.

Although the new Jetta’s EPA ratings are impressive, they’re not as good as those of non-hybrid gasoline-powered vehicles. For example, the Honda Civic sedan will achieve EPA ratings 32/42 mpg with its 1.5-liter turbo engine. It also has a continuously variable transmission. Many of the Jetta’s closest rivals, such as the Chevy Cruze and Hyundai Elantra, will achieve 40 mpg on the highway when equipped with their 1.5-liter turbo engine and continuously variable transmission.

Volkswagen claims that improved aerodynamics is the key to Jetta’s increased efficiency. This can be attributed in part to active grille shutters or new air curtains that funnel airflow around front wheels. The drag coefficient is low at 0.27. The eight-speed automatic is another major contributor. It replaces the six speed automatic in older Jettas and also has a standard engine stop/start feature.

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta will switch to the MQB modular platform, which is also used by the new Golf. The new sedan is bigger than ever, has more interior space and bolder styling, with a gently sloping roofline. The car will be powered by a turbocharged, 1.4-liter inline four engine that produces 147 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet torque. The car will feature a digital cockpit instrument cluster with full-color Digital Cockpit, 10-color ambient lighting, precollision brake, and an updated infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. We are confident that the higher output GLI variant will be available soon.

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta will go on sale in the second half of 2019. Keep checking back for the full First Drive.
