Perhaps McLaren wasn’t aware it was a race
The VW I.D. R Racecar was created without any limitations. This allowed VW to create the ultimate racing machine. The only thing that holds R Racecar back is the I.D. R refers to current technology and physical limitations of the human body. This all-electric racecar is challenging the limits of performance, embarrassing many of the most powerful supercars.
The VW I.D. R was the headline-grabbing vehicle in 2019, when it set a new track record at Pike’s Peak Hill Climb. The I.D. R reached the summit of the mountain in 7 minutes, 57 seconds. This solidifies the I.D. R is a motorsport legend. VW also sent the I.D. R to break the record at the Tianmen Mountain hill climbing in China, with a time 7 minutes 38 seconds. The VW I.D. R holds the current record for electric vehicles at the Nurburgring, with a lap of 6:05 minutes and 5 seconds.
The I.D. is a great way to learn if you are still not convinced. R is VW’s commercial demonstration of its electric car power. This is the I.D. R equal parts marketing tool and engineering exercise as VW tries to gain traction on the electric car market. The I.D. Chris Harris from Top Gear takes R’s performance to context and heads to the track with him to see how VW’s electric show horse works.
The VW I.D. R is powered by three electric motors, one at the front and two at the back. Two separate batteries are used to distribute the weight. This results in a 0-60 time of 2 seconds, and cornering speeds that surpass F1 cars. This is enough to make a McLaren look bad in drag racing.
