The Fastest Police Cars – Track Tested by State Troopers

Chevy, Dodge and Ford battle it out on the track for which of the Big Three police cruisers is the fastest.

It takes speed to capture a fleeing criminal if you are the Michigan State Police Force or any American Police force. Companies like Ford and Chevrolet have provided some of the most powerful vehicles to officers across the country (note: This list does not include international police cars).

You might be wondering, however, which one is faster? The Michigan State Police put their patrol cars to the testing, on both the track (Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, Michigan) and straight, to find out which one would win. You might be surprised at the results.

Chevrolet Caprice

In 2009, the new Chevrolet Caprice was made available to officers. It was exclusively designed for police use. The Caprice can be ordered in either a V6 or V8 of 3.6-liters. It also comes with the optional V8 at no extra cost. Here are the results.

Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe was used as a police vehicle at least since 1997, unlike the recently introduced Caprice. The Tahoe’s spacious interior was ideal for passengers and its reliable engine made it possible to remain in service for many years. The Tahoe’s latest version is available in rear- or all-wheel drive with a 5.3-liter V8.

Dodge Charger

Dodge introduced a police-spec version of the Charger when it was brought back to market in 2005. The Charger quickly became the preferred police vehicle for most stations. It features two new engines for 2017, a 3.6-liter and a 5.8-liter V6. This makes it a top-of-the-line vehicle in terms of overall performance.

Ford Police Interceptor Sedan

The Ford Special Service Police and Police Interceptor sedan, also known as the Ford Taurus, officially replaced the Crown Victoria in 2011 when it was discontinued. The Taurus was a powerful and efficient engine, with the EcoBoost 2.0-liter EcoBoost. It brought about much-needed changes to the forces across the country.

Ford Police Interceptor Utility

The Ford PI Utility, despite its official “Police Interceptor”, designation is nothing more than a modified Explorer SUV. That’s not a bad thing. The Explorer, which replaces the outgoing Crown Victoria, has been a standard in American police forces since 2011. There are two options for engine choices: a 3.7-liter V6 or a EcoBoost V6.
