Few cars can continue with the same design over decades. Only the Land Rover Defender, which is temporarily out of production, and the Mercedes G-Class are examples. Although the W464 version of the Mercedes G-Class was not supposed to be released until January 15,, images from China have somehow surfaced showing it in all its retro-flavored boxy form.
These grainy photos show that Mercedes has not altered the exterior design. It’s a straight copy of the original block. This is something we all agree on. This evolutionary design is a natural fit given the G Class’s history, which has been around since 1979 and features almost the same exterior appearance.
Although details regarding the vehicle’s dimensions are not yet available, it is known that the new generation will be smaller than the W463 model sold since 1990. Even so, a A significantly larger cabin Smarter packaging has helped to create this new space. The new interior will have more space and will also be equipped with technology. We’ve known this for a while.
The familiar Lego shape of the W464 should not fool you into thinking it is just another version. The off-road prowess of the three differential locks and low range ladder-type frames is still evident, but much of the hardware has been upgraded.
AMG and Mercedes have collaborated to create a new independent double-wishbone suspension. The nine-speed automatic transmission with torque converter is another relevant example. You could continue to mention the new rigid rear axle, 360 degree camera system, 18-inch all terrain tires, and other goodies.
The 2019 G-Class will also get new engines, but that information will only be available at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
