The Next-Gen BMW X1 is Announced for 2022 Launch

It will be made in Germany.

The next-generation BMW X1 was first spotted by us in June of this year . A few weeks later, the manufacturer confirmed that the crossover would get an all-electric model. We know the date for the third-generation BMW X1 is coming soon, although many pieces of the puzzle remain unsolved.

The Bavarians confirmed the new X1’s arrival in 2022, in a lengthy press release. BMW has not yet revealed a debut date, but it says that the X1 will be available with both a combustion engine as well as a fully-electric drivetrain.

The new X1 will be produced at the company’s Regensburg, Germany plant. BMW plans to have at most one fully-electric vehicle in every German factory. These include Munich, Dingolfing and Leipzig, where the i4/iX and iX will be made starting next year. The Leipzig plant will also be used to produce the next-generation Mini Countryman, which will have zero emissions.

The first spy pictures of the premium cross-country show that the new X1 will look slightly bigger than the current model. The new X1 will be built on the modified BMW front-wheel drive platform, but it should also be available with an optional all-wheel-drive system. The high-riding Bimmer will be available with several powertrain options, including diesel and traditional gasoline engines as well as some electrified options.

We can make an educated guess as to when the new X1 will be available. Assuming production will start in the first half 2022, BMW should likely show the first photos of the vehicle in the second half next year.

Currently, the X1 in America is outperforming its direct competitors. The crossover from Bavaria sells better than the Lexus UX and its direct rivals, Mercedes-Benz GLA GLA, Cadillac XT4, Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 (9.967)
