The latest rendering shows an idea for Volkswagen’s second generation Phaeton flagship car. The all-new Phaeton is one of the victims in the ongoing Dieselgate scandal. Although has been delayed , VW did not specify when. It is likely that it will be available by the end of the decade. However, this will only happen if the company has money left over to invest in its top-of-the-line model after all the recall-related fines and costs.
The modular electric toolkit (MEB), which serves as the foundation for future hybrids and electric vehicles, has been refocused by the company. The next Phaeton will not only be an electric vehicle, but VW may also include combustion engines to make the full-size sedan more appealing. The attached rendering shows a larger Passat with an almost four-door coupe shape. The digital illustration shows the all-electric Phaeton with its front bumper treatment. According to VW’s board management, it will have “long distance capability”. The old Phaeton, even though it was released in 2002, is still available for purchase today. The company’s slowest-selling vehicle will be the last to go. This will happen in March, when VW will shut down the Dresden factory for retooling.
