The world needs some funky crossovers.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Toyota has been considering producing the futuristic Future Toyota Adventure Concept crossover (FTAC) in a market dominated with crossovers. The concept was unveiled by Toyota last year at the Los Angeles automobile show. It was intended as a design experiment. According to Jack Hollis (group vice president and general manger of Toyota’s division) and AutoGuide.com, the Toyota FTAC could be in production soon.
Hollis said that the FT-AC was similar in interest to the Toyota FJ Cruiser. The FJ was his favorite. The product was almost identical to what we presented on stage in two years. I would place FT-AC in a similar boat.”
It is difficult to predict how much of this concept will actually be produced. The FT-AC, for example, has cameras in the side mirrors that can capture photos and video. You can use the LED roof rack as a flash camera. The concept’s infrared cameras are easily removed, and the fog lights can also be used as flashlights. These are very innovative innovations, but it could be difficult to make a production version.
Toyota revealed the crossover when it said that the FT-AC was a gasoline-powered vehicle with a torque vectoring all-wheel drive system and four-wheel lock functionality. A next-generation hybrid powertrain is also possible.
Despite the many neat features, the overall design of FT-AC is not too different from what you would see on the production line. Although the front and rear fascias look a little wild, they can be easily trimmed to appeal to a wider audience. You will find enough plastic cladding and skid plates to satisfy the most avid off-road enthusiast.
Crossovers are selling so well, it is only natural that Toyota would explore the more unusual side of the crossover market. The FT-AC could be a Toyota light-duty off-road vehicle, with automakers rushing to fill every nook of all sizes of crossovers.
